Swift Conservation Takes Flight in Killarney Clann Schemes
Following eight months of dedicated efforts by Clann residents and staff, the Swift Conservation Project reached an exciting milestone in 2024. The project saw the installation of nine Swift nesting boxes, a calling system, and an informative wall sign on site.
The initiative was sparked by residents’ concern over the alarming 40% decline in Swift populations over the past 15 years. Their passion for conservation grew after a guest speaker from Swift Conservation Ireland visited the scheme to share insights about these remarkable birds and the challenges they face.
Motivated to make a difference, residents quickly began sourcing funding to bring the project to life. With generous support from Kerry County Council and the Killarney Looking Good Committee, the necessary equipment, including the nesting boxes and calling system, was secured. The installations were completed by Clúid Works operatives.
The team is optimistic that the new nesting boxes will attract Swift this year, offering these incredible birds a safe place to thrive. Looking ahead, there are plans to install a nest box camera to give residents a closer look at the activity inside, fostering even more engagement and appreciation for this vital conservation effort. Thank you to everyone who contributed to making this project a reality.
