The cost of living crisis is putting a strain on many households, and food insecurity is a rising concern. The Economic and Social Research Institute developed a measure which defined food poverty as the inability to have an adequate and nutritious diet, due to issues of affordability or accessibility 8.9% of the population experienced food poverty in 2021, with 6.2% of the population experiencing severe food deprivation.

Clann is committed to more than just providing secure high-quality housing. The team understand the importance of fostering thriving communities, and that includes supporting residents facing food insecurity.

Partnering with a Difference: Clann and FoodCloud
Clann has partnered with FoodCloud, a social enterprise that connects surplus food from supermarkets like Dunnes Stores, Lidl, Tesco, and even restaurants like Nando’s, with charities and community groups. This partnership ensures that perfectly good food doesn’t go to waste, while residents have access to fresh produce, meat, oils, bread, and more – all completely free.

Vivekanand Raggoo, Scheme Manager at Broome Lodge in Cabra, Dublin, goes the extra mile for residents. While FoodCloud doesn’t have a delivery option, Vivekanand uses his own time and car to collect donations. He emphasises the importance of flexibility, working with store managers to pick up donations outside of peak hours. His dedication not only provides residents with vital groceries, but also fosters a sense of community by leaving the items in a central location and sending a group text to residents.

Residents have seen a significant difference thanks to Clann’s partnership with FoodCloud. Access to fresh food helps alleviate the financial burden and contributes to a healthy lifestyle.
