Cúpla focal [a few words]…

Traditionally, the 1st to 17th March marks Seachtain na Gaeilge, a celebration of all things related to the Irish language. We cannot be certain when Irish first came to Ireland, but many scholars believe that it was here over 2,500 years ago. And, between now and then, a whole host of words came into the language from invaders, settlers and visitors alike. Just by way of example, the surname of our President, Higgins or Ó hUigínn, comes from uigingeach, an Irish word for Viking. So the ties to history remain, even to this day.

Of course, even closer again, the name Clann is drawn from Irish: Clann takes its name from ‘family’ or a group of people with a common interest, promoting the importance of community in our age-friendly housing.

We caught up with Mick Lynch recently, a resident in Ard Carrig, the Chair of Clann’s Resident Advisory Group (CRAG) and recent Housing Hero winner at the CIH awards. Mick had previously told us of his grá (love) of Gaeilge (Irish), so we asked him to tell us a bit more about that.
