A tumble or a fall in our later years can be a little embarrassing, but it can also be permanently life changing.
A fall can result in serious injuries, but it can also point to an underlying health concern.
If you have already had a fall you might be more likely to fall again. If you have a fall, even a minor one, make sure you tell a scheme manager and visit your GP for a check-up.
There are many ways you can reduce the risk of a fall. The HSE’s Strategy to Prevent Falls and Fractures in Ireland’s Ageing Population outlines several ways to reduce your risks;
- Keep the stairs and floor clear from shoes, newspapers and books
- Use the light on the stairs to light the way
- Add non-slip mats and grab rails in the bathroom
- Keep a lamp close to the bed
- Wear a personal alarm
